Trusting God When Inspiration Hits

Posted by Heather Choco on

Our church will be starting a new program in January that I am so excited about. We will be serving a free weekly dinner to our neighbors and really, to anyone who wants to come. I’d love to tell my story about how this program came to be.

Recently, as l listened to Pastor Jeff talking about ways to reach out to our neighbors, I thought about a weekend several years ago when my sister, Cathi, came for a visit. How can my church reach out to our community? was the question swirling in my sister’s head as she drove from Corvallis, OR to spend a weekend with me in Seattle. My sister and her husband joined our small group during their visit, to serve at Teen Feed. As we provided a meal to homeless teens, inspiration, or perhaps the Holy Spirit hit Cathi and she knew she wanted to open her church doors each week to serve a meal to their neighbors. This was five years ago and the inspiration has become reality. Cathi’s church hosts 130 people a week at their church’s community meal.

Back to sitting in the church pew listening to Jeff I couldn’t shake the feeling that what was needed in Corvallis, might be needed in Sammamish too. Knowing that if I suggested this to church leadership, I would most likely to asked to lead it up, I tried to ignore that still, small voice. But it just grew louder until I had to pay attention. Hence the beginning of our community meal served here at SPC. The goal is for this to be a meal open to everyone, those within our congregation and those outside, those who are hungry for food, and those who are hungry for fellowship. The hope is that these meals will be about so much more than just eating food. Yes, stomachs will be filled but hopefully relationships will be built and needs, that might only be known to God, will be met.

So, on Thursday nights for the month of January, we will step out in faith and open our doors to our neighbors. I am slowly learning to say “Yes” to God and then to trust Him with whatever happens.
