Grief is a universal emotion. To lose something that one cherishes--a loved one, an ability, an opportunity, a sense of well-being--forces us to face our losses and question who we are, why it happened, and who the God is that allowed it to be. Because of that, grief can be the seedbed for spiritual formation, if we are willing to look it in the face.
We are fortunate that in the Old Testament, there is an ancient and elegant story of grief--the book of Job. In this series, we will take a look at Job's story and compare it to our own. As we face a world filled with mass shootings, heightened hatred, fear and longing for something better, we will see that our story is not new, and that God has a story to tell in us in the grieving places of our lives. Symbols are everywhere. You can't see a black and white apple with a piece out of it and not think about your iPhone. You can't see a swoosh without thinking immediately about your Nike shoes. Powerful symbols capture the essence of what they represent, sometimes telling you more about the thing inside than any word can do.
Our Christian faith is full of powerful symbols, too--Biblical images that visually carry meaning and purpose about our God and the way of life he calls us to. In this series we are going to take a look at some of the most compelling and well known symbols of the Christian faith. Our purpose is to use them as a way to fall deeper in love with the God we worship, who loves us enough to let us see him everywhere, even in the common things of life.
This fall SPC is entering into a new adventure--The building of a new children's and youth center on our campus that will act as a hub for discipleship at SPC and for our community. To break new ground can be a scary thing, and yet it is what God's people have always been called to do. From the call of Abraham to "go!" to the call of Jesus to his to disciples to reach out to the hurting and lost world, the church is God's place where new ground is being broken all the time. Join us as we get excited about this new ground we are breaking at SPC, hear how you can be a part of it, and explore the Scriptures through this lens of faith together.
