October 24, 2021 Study Notes

  1. In your life, have you ever had a “plot twist”? What was it? Was it something you brought on? Life’s circumstances? How did you sense God at work?
  2. What invitation does Jesus give to these fisherman? What seems unusual about their response? How might Zebedee have felt?
  3. Spiritually are you still preparing the nets? Leaving the boat? Following hard after Jesus? Feeling left behind?
  4. Henry Drummond (a 19th Century Scottish evangelist) came up with “8 Steps in Discerning the Will of God.” 1) Pray; 2)Think; 3)Talk to wise people, but do not regard their decision as final; 4)Be aware of the bias of your own will, but do not be too much afraid of it either; 5)In the meantime, do the next best thing, for doing God’s will in the small things is the best preparation for doing it in the great things; 6)When decision and action are necessary, go ahead; 7)Never reconsider the decision once it has been acted on; 8) You probably won’t find out until afterward, perhaps long after, that you have been led at all. What gives you hope in those steps? Challenge?
  5. What part of God’s will are you discerning right now? How might your small group help you through that discernment?
